An aluminate is a compound containing aluminium and oxygen with more electropositive elements. Usually aluminate refers to AlO2-. Examples include sodium aluminate and potassium aluminate. Aluminate can also refer to the polyatomic ion AlO33-
Minerals like chrysoberyl are sometimes called aluminates, although they are often classified as mixed oxides. As minerals, aluminates are much less common than aluminosilicates, which occur in bewildering variety.
